Betty Sue Cheek Yarborough Endowed Fund in Nursing

Jan Elizabeth Yarborough, JD, RN earned a bachelor of science in nursing from the UNC Greensboro School of Nursing in 1980, where she graduated magna cum laude. Ms. Yarborough was also a distinguished recipient of the Katherine Smith Reynolds Scholarship at UNCG. Ms. Yarborough served as a coronary care nurse at Rowan Memorial Hospital and served as a clinical faculty member at Rowan Technical College for the ADN and LPN programs until 1984. She enrolled in the Wake Forest University School of Law in 1984 and graduated magna cum laude in 1987. She has practiced law since 1987, concentrating her practice in managed care issues, which combines her education and interests in nursing and law. Ms. Yarborough is married to Carlie J. Coats, Jr., and has a son, Ryan C. Bostic. She resides and practices law in Chapel Hill, NC. Ms. Yarborough and her husband are also competitive amateur ballroom dancers.
Betty Sue Cheek Yarborough was born in Buncombe County, NC, on November 20, 1931. She graduated in 1949 from Flat Creek High School in Weaverville, NC, with the distinction of valedictorian, and earned a diploma from the Memorial Mission Hospital School of Nursing in Asheville, NC in 1952. She served as a physician’s nurse in Asheville and later as a charge nurse for an inpatient unit at Broughton State Hospital in Morganton until her untimely death at the age of 39 in April of 1971. Mrs. Yarborough is remembered for her unfailing cheerfulness and infectious joy of life. She was a devoted and loving wife to William E. Yarborough, Jr., and mother to son, Bill and daughter, Jan.
