Betty Rowe Penny Endowed Scholarship

Betty originally planned to major in music at Woman’s College (now UNC Greensboro); however, she majored in home economics education and received a bachelor of science from Woman’s College in 1959 and a master of science from East Carolina University in 1979. Betty’s love of music has continued throughout the years, playing for her church and encouraging her children and grandchildren to play the piano.
Betty retired after 28 years of teaching service in Eastern North Carolina and then served as a part-time counselor for six additional years in vocational education. Prior to moving to Rocky Mount, she taught six years in South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama. Betty and Horace are the loving parents of three daughters and grandparents of thee children. They enjoy travel, church activities and keeping abreast of legislative issues. Betty’s friends are quick to voice that she is an avid bridge player and has enjoyed the game for almost 50 years.
Betty and Horace are voracious fans of North Carolina State football, basketball, and most recently, baseball team. Horace Penny recently gave a generous scholarship gift to the Athletic Department at North Carolina State University, and he was most supportive of Betty’s desire to provide a scholarship to enable deserving students at the UNCG School of Human Environmental Sciences.
