Barbara Ziel & Alice Kautz Endowed Scholarship in Nursing

Barbara Ziel (1923-2011)
Barbara graduated from the Mercy Hospital Diploma School of Nursing in Pittsburg in the 1940s. She spent the next 25 years raising her four children. In the 1970s, she took up her career in nursing working at an inpatient psychiatric facility and then performing screening physicals for Michigan state employees, retiring in the late 1980s. Barbara is proud to have traveled to all 50 states in the U.S. and visited several foreign countries, including Australia. Many of these trips she made with her life-long friend and nurse colleague, Peg. Barbara was always an active volunteer, her last work was with the Shephard Center in Winston Salem. Barbara last resided at the Salemtowne Assisted Living Facility in Winston Salem where, despite her memory loss, she continued to enjoy flowers, artwork, lectures, and reading.
Alice Kantz (1920-2008)
Alice graduated from the Denver General Hospital Diploma School of Nursing in the 1940s. She spent the next 25 years raising her three children, In the 1970s she took up her career in nursing working in hospice and home care, retiring in the late 1980s. After retiring to Sun City, AZ, she was most proud of her roses, which she delivered all over town to friends who needed a smile. Alice was an active volunteer throughout her life, and her last work was with Hospice in Sun City. Alice died from metastatic cancer in her assisted living apartment, pain free, cared for by Hospice, with her husband of 50 years by her side.
Don Kautz and Carol Ziel were married in 1983 and had three children. They met when Carol was the nursing supervisor on a spinal cord rehabilitation unit where Don worked as a staff nurse. Carol graduated from the University of Kentucky School of Nursing and later from the U.S. School of Medicine. At the time of this scholarship establishment, Carol is an assistant clinical professor of ophthalmology at the Duke Eye and Laser Center in Winston Salem. Don Kautz earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in nursing from the University of Kentucky, and at the time of this scholarship establishment is an associate professor of nursing and director of the Hickory Outreach Program at UNC Greensboro. Carol and Don established this scholarship to honor their mothers and to promote advanced education for nurses in North Carolina.
