Anne J. Murphy served nine years as director of nurses for Burlington Industries, joining them in 1970. She was a staff nurse for Ford Motor Co., Fabricon Products, and Scott Paper Co. The Anne Murphy Scholarship Fund was established in her honor by Burlington Industries in 1979. She was active in state, regional, and national nursing programs for many years. Among her various activities she served as adjunct professor and guest lecturer at UNC-Chapel Hill School of Public Health Nursing, and as a member of the advisory committee of the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine Arthritis Center, and completed a term as member of the National Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety and Health. She has published numerous articles on occupational health and industrial health nursing. Murphy attended Bridgewater College in VA and received her registered nursing degree at the Lewis Gale School of Nursing in Roanoke, VA.
